In sprinkler or overhead irrigation, water is transported via pipes to one or more central areas in the field and distributed from above with high-pressure sprinklers or guns. A system that uses sprinklers, sprays, or guns mounted on permanently installed risers is generally called a permanent irrigation system. The rotating high-pressure sprinklers are called rotors and are driven by a ball, gear, or impact mechanism. Rotors can be designed to rotate in a full or partial circle. Guns, generally operating at very high pressures of 275 to 900 kPa and flows of 3 to 76 L/s, are similar to rotors except for having nozzle diameters typically ranging from 10 to 50 mm. Guns are used not only for irrigation but also for industrial applications such as dust suppression and tree cutting. Sprinklers can also be mounted on mobile platforms connected to a water source via a hose. Wheel-mounted and mobile systems known as automatic moving sprinkler systems can irrigate areas such as small farms, sports fields, parks, yards, and unattended cemeteries. Most of them use a long polyethylene pipe wound around a steel drum. The drum moves by irrigation water or a small gasoline engine. As the hose winds around the drum, the sprinkler is pulled along the area. When the sprinkler returns to the drum, the system shuts off. Such a system is commonly known as a “water-wheeled” mobile irrigation sprinkler and is widely used for dust suppression, irrigation, and application of wastewater to soil. Other systems use a flat rubber hose that is pulled from behind while the sprinkler platform is drawn by a cable. The sprinkler irrigation system is an irrigation method that waters agricultural fields or gardens using high-pressure spray nozzles or sprayers. This system provides a rain‑like irrigation to plants by spraying water into the air. Here are the basic features and advantages of the sprinkler irrigation system:

Features of the Sprinkler Irrigation System:

Spray Nozzles or Sprinklers: In sprinkler irrigation systems, water is distributed in the air through high‑pressure spray nozzles or sprinklers. These nozzles cause the water to fall on plants in droplet form.
Pressurization System: A pressurization system is required to spray water at high pressure. This includes components such as pipes that deliver water to the nozzles and a pump.
Spray Heads: Sprinklers or spray nozzles contain spray heads that facilitate the distribution of water. These heads are used to adjust the spray angle and distance.
Timing and Control Units: Sprinkler irrigation systems may include timing and control units to regulate when and for how long water is applied. This allows irrigation programs to be set.
System Design: The sprinkler irrigation system is designed in a customized manner based on the size of the irrigation area and plant types. Nozzle types, water pressure, and distribution pattern are taken into account.
Advantages of the Sprinkler Irrigation System:
Uniform Plant Irrigation: The sprinkler irrigation system ensures even distribution of water and provides water to all sides of the plants.
Suitable for Large Areas: This system is ideal for irrigating large agricultural fields or gardens.
Cooling the Air: During sprinkling, water droplets evaporate in the air, which can help cool the surrounding air.
High Efficiency: Plants can achieve high efficiency with the sprinkler irrigation system and increase their growth potential.
Frost Protection: In some cases, sprinkler irrigation can be used to protect plants from frost. By spraying water in cold weather, the surfaces of the plants are protected.
Convenience: The sprinkler irrigation system can be operated automatically, making the irrigation process easier and saving labor.
Plant Care: The system facilitates plant maintenance and provides irrigation suitable for the plants' needs.

The sprinkler irrigation system is commonly used in large agricultural areas and commercial gardens. It is preferred because it ensures uniform and regular irrigation of plants and provides effective irrigation over large areas. However, water consumption may be higher and it requires energy, so careful attention must be paid to the efficient use of water resources.
